A new addition

Today, we added a new member to the I Love Wednesdays family. She is a beauty and is as yet unnamed. I am now the proud owner of a Hassleblad 500cm.

I have to say that when I first laid eyes on her, she did bring a tear to my eye and there were shrieks of excitement. So much so, that the lovely workers at Australia Post looked on an giggled as I did my little happy dance.

I of course had to take some photos of it, so I set up an impromptu studio in my living room and shot a couple photos of the Hassie and here they are.

And one shot taken with her. My first shot and light metered through the fine art of guesstimation, so please excuse it’s badness.

It’s the view from our balcony onto the alley behind the apartment, I was literally too excited to even go out to a location to shoot.

There will be lots more photos up soon as I’m fairly certain the hassie won’t be leaving my side for many weeks to come.

Back from the APPAs

I got back to Sydney last night from 5 days of photography goodness. I’m still catching up on all my emails at the moment and I promise I will reply to everyone today

This is my first year as an Emerging Member of the AIPP (Australia Institute of Professional Photography) and meeting so many wonderful people and seeing the fantastic quality of work produced from all around Australia was just incredible. There really are an awful lot of talented people here.

I missed the scoring of my print and was just running into the judging area as it was turning around. I had to ask 4 people before one of them told me it got a Silver Award and here it is.

To say I’m excited is probably a bit of an understatement and I can’t wait to see what next year brings.

26 years and 364 days

I’ve started writing this post a few times now, but I just can’t seem to find the right words for it.

Tomorrow I turn 27 and I start another chapter of my life. It’s a chapter that’s starting rather appropriately with a journey to Melbourne and seeing the Australian Professional Photography Awards and meeting a great bunch of photographers that I’ve been talking to, but never met.

I really can’t wait for my birthday to see what the next year brings, I’m sure it’ll be quite the adventure.

I leave you with a pic from around the time of my first birthday and rather appropriately my first passport photo, oh how things have changed.

Something a little bit different

I’ve recently had a chance to do something a little bit different and shoot some glassware for the lovely and talented Roxanne Costello from Jaga. She needed some product shots for her range and I was excited and nervous to shoot it. I was nervous because I wasn’t sure what the space was like that we were going to be shooting in and what I would need, so carried pretty much my entire studio up quite a number of stairs.

If there’s one thing that I learned from this shoot, it’s that I am not made to carry an entire studio worth of supplies, and that I will either bring an assistant or need to workout.

I’m going to apologise in advance for the length of this post. I started picking photos from the lovely Jen & Hamish’s wedding and just couldn’t stop. I know this is going to sound cliche, but there was seriously a lot of love in this little corner of the world for their wedding. Even in spite of some hiccups with orders, Jen was the calmest bride and Hamish was the calmest groom I have ever seen.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, they are the sweetest couple and thank you both for letting me be a part of your day.

I’ve been a horrible blogger and I promise I’ll try to be better. Sickness and a lot of work have meant I was either sleeping or trying to work (emphasis on the trying). But I have a little sneak peak of the lovely Jen & Hamish, who had the sweetest wedding surrounded by so much love. I’m so glad to have been a part of that and to have been able to capture it for them. Thank you both.

My grandmother left this very sweet message on my mobile last night. “Hi chook, it’s grandma, I just wanted to congratulate you on winning your Silver Award, even though I’m not sure exactly what it is for.” It was actually one of the many calls I received from my very proud, yet slightly confused family. They were all so happy I won an award, but weren’t quite sure what it was. I was too nervous to tell them that I’d entered in my images, so when they found out it was all rather a jumble of information, but they were all proud none the less.

That being said, I won my first Silver Award at the NSW AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) Awards that were held over the weekend. I loved seeing work from other incredibly talented photographers in NSW and I can’t wait for the National Awards in Melbourne and seeing work from all over Australia.

The Creative Act

I think these really are the perfect words to describe what we photographers do. In a sense we hunt out the perfect photo. I know that I wait for it, obsess about it, plan for it, but at the end of the day, it usually comes down to a second. A second here or there; and you end up with the perfect selection of photos or ones which are just ok.

In a race, a second, or even a fraction of a second, really is the difference between coming first and last.

Photography is the same.

I always want to come first.
