Something a little bit different

I’ve recently had a chance to do something a little bit different and shoot some glassware for the lovely and talented Roxanne Costello from Jaga. She needed some product shots for her range and I was excited and nervous to shoot it. I was nervous because I wasn’t sure what the space was like that we were going to be shooting in and what I would need, so carried pretty much my entire studio up quite a number of stairs.

If there’s one thing that I learned from this shoot, it’s that I am not made to carry an entire studio worth of supplies, and that I will either bring an assistant or need to workout.

Thank you to Roxanne for letting me be a part of her new range and you can check out her full range on her website soon or at Gaffa Gallery in the Sydney CBD.

JEN & HAMISH

I’m going to apologise in advance for the length of this post. I started picking photos from the lovely Jen & Hamish’s wedding and just couldn’t stop. I know this is going to sound cliche, but there was seriously a lot of love in this little corner of the world for their wedding. Even in spite of some hiccups with orders, Jen was the calmest bride and Hamish was the calmest groom I have ever seen.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, they are the sweetest couple and thank you both for letting me be a part of your day.

Light

I’ve been a horrible blogger and I promise I’ll try to be better. Sickness and a lot of work have meant I was either sleeping or trying to work (emphasis on the trying). But I have a little sneak peak of the lovely Jen & Hamish, who had the sweetest wedding surrounded by so much love. I’m so glad to have been a part of that and to have been able to capture it for them. Thank you both.

Awards

My grandmother left this very sweet message on my mobile last night. “Hi chook, it’s grandma, I just wanted to congratulate you on winning your Silver Award, even though I’m not sure exactly what it is for.” It was actually one of the many calls I received from my very proud, yet slightly confused family. They were all so happy I won an award, but weren’t quite sure what it was. I was too nervous to tell them that I’d entered in my images, so when they found out it was all rather a jumble of information, but they were all proud none the less.

That being said, I won my first Silver Award at the NSW AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) Awards that were held over the weekend. I loved seeing work from other incredibly talented photographers in NSW and I can’t wait for the National Awards in Melbourne and seeing work from all over Australia.

This is my Silver winning print from the Pocahontas shoot.

The Creative Act

The creative act lasts but a brief moment, a lightning instant of give-and-take, just long enough for you to level the camera and to trap the fleeting prey in your little box. – Henri Cartier-Bresson

I think these really are the perfect words to describe what we photographers do. In a sense we hunt out the perfect photo. I know that I wait for it, obsess about it, plan for it, but at the end of the day, it usually comes down to a second. A second here or there; and you end up with the perfect selection of photos or ones which are just ok.

In a race, a second, or even a fraction of a second, really is the difference between coming first and last.

Photography is the same.

I always want to come first.

Heather – Mid-Michigan Photographer - Lovely pose, an excellent expression. Well done!March 14, 2010 – 1:44 am

Lisa Novakowski - I love it! I love that even with all the wonderful color, it’s her beautiful eyes that you notice first!March 10, 2010 – 3:51 pm

Cliff - And you do come first. You do a great job of capturing pure moments.March 9, 2010 – 12:53 pm

austin wedding photographer - This is great! It looks like an ad in a magazine. She’s beautiful. I really like your clean processing.March 9, 2010 – 10:52 am

Edric Morales - this shot reminds me a lot of that image from the cover of National Geographic. Those eyes are so deep. This shot is great!!March 9, 2010 – 10:27 am

Alen Abdula - Beautiful shot! Love it!March 9, 2010 – 4:06 am

Marianne Taylor - Sometimes I do like to ‘craft’ the picture, get from a concept in my head to a print in my hand – and I feel like the whole journey in between is a creative. But that’s really just for my personal work. For everything else, this fits.

Beautiful shot too.March 8, 2010 – 11:43 pm

fotograf Lublin - Great picture and This eyes …March 8, 2010 – 9:42 pm

Kyle - That is stunning. Seriously. I’m a little in love with this shot.March 8, 2010 – 6:45 pm

Kelly Ry - Gorgeous! The vibrancy of the colors and her expression make for a fantastic image.March 8, 2010 – 7:57 am

Cheshire wedding phtographer - Great photo. Intense eyes. Well captured expressionMarch 8, 2010 – 6:06 am

Joey Chandler - I would say that it is a matter of seconds – but who is to say that one second is better then the rest. Yes Cartier nailed many amazing moments, but maybe he missed the really great ones that happen right after the kiss. I think the challenge to creativity is making the most of your seconds.

JoeyMarch 8, 2010 – 3:53 am

Dean Simmons - Beautiful.March 7, 2010 – 10:21 pm

Az - I like your way of thinking, the creative process can be a struggle sometimes and planning has got to help.March 7, 2010 – 8:51 pm
