Adolfo + Linda // When Harlem & Dallas met Sydney
A year before their wedding, I’d met Adolfo and Linda in less than usual circumstances. Hailing from Harlem (NY) and Dallas (Texas) respectively, they’d moved to Portland in part for studies, and in part for something new. In 2013, after reading their convincingly charming ad, I found myself crashing their cosy Airbnb.
Like lego pieces, we instantly clicked. We explored the city’s corners finding the tastiest of tacos, nerded out about music and comics, and compared life growing up, Harlem vs Dallas vs Sydney.
Also lots of craft beer hunting (it was Portland after all).
On the last night I was there, we–followed by a throng of post-beer-fest Portlandians–crossed a road to where a street drummer was kicking off a beat. Adolfo and Linda looked at each other, grinned, then entrancingly danced their way over. You could see it on the faces of the crowd, that they were falling a little bit in love with them too. We all rushed to join and a makeshift block party sprung to life.
I was super happy that Adolfo and Linda invited me back to the US, this time to photograph their wedding in Texas. It was another night filled with glorious merengue, salsa, and the robot.
